GISD Wellness Policy

In the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, PL 105-268, the U.S. Congress established a new requirement for all local agencies, including public schools, with a federally-funded National School Lunch program. The local agencies are required to develop and implement wellness policies that address nutrition and physical activity. You will find that Garrison ISD has developed a wellness plan for GISD PreK-12 that meets the new federal requirement.

This plan is developed by using input and resources from Federal and State agencies, staff members, parents, students, and community partners. The Local School Wellness Guidelines are established within the school district's School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).

Annual meetings will be held with parents, SHAC committee members Child Nutrition department and other entities to review the guidelines set forth in the GISD Wellness Policy and GISD Local School Wellness Guidelines.

A review of the GISD Wellness Policy and GISD Local School Wellness Guidelines was conducted by multiple stakeholders including school staff, administration, parents, and community members during two meetings held on May 10, 2017 and May 25, 2017. The resulting changes to these to important documents can be found by clicking on the two links below.

If you would like to participate in this annual meeting held in May of each year, please feel free to contact the GISD Central Office at 936-347-7000.
